4 important steps for cleaning kids’ rooms

Step 1. Keep surfaces clean and hygienic

Regularly wiping down surfaces and furniture is one of the most important steps to keeping kids' rooms clean and reducing allergens and bacteria.

Kids bring a lot of dirt inside with them every day, whether they’ve been at school or playing outside. While it might be fast and easy to reach for commercial cleaners, these can often irritate your kids’ sensitive lungs, eyes, and skin.

We recommend you use a natural DIY cleaner to keep everything hygienic during your weekly and monthly cleaning routines. This one’s safe enough for your kids to use themselves, and it smells great!

You’ll need:

  • A plastic spray bottle
  • ¼ cup of white vinegar
  • 1 cup of water
  • 20 drops of your favorite pure essential oil (lemon and orange are our favorites)

Add the liquids to the spray bottle and shake gently to mix. Then, spray the solution onto a microfiber cloth and wipe down all the furniture and surfaces in your kids room, such as shelving, dressers, desk, headboard, toy chests, light switches, door handles etc.

Work from one side of the room to the other, so you don’t miss a spot. And don’t just wipe away dirty patches. Ensure you wipe all surface areas completely for a total clean.

Step 2. Reduce rubbish and clutter

Reducing clutter is one of the keys to making life easier when you’re cleaning up kids’ rooms. During your daily and weekly cleans, keep an eye out for any chance to minimize items in these rooms.

  • Pick up and throw away any obvious trash like food wrappers or tissues
  • Open drawers and cupboards and look for anything that can be thrown away
  • Remove everything that belongs in other rooms (e.g. cutlery, dishes, glasses, towels)
  • Put away everything on the floor - this not only reduces mess, but removes safety hazards too
  • Go through your kids books, clothes, and toys with them every now and then to decide if there are broken, outgrown, or obsolete things that they don’t want anymore

Step 3. Vacuum carefully

There’s nothing worse than vacuuming in a hurry and finding out later that a crucial Lego piece, coin, or toy has vanished. Always vacuum carefully to ensure you’re only picking up dust, pet hair and fluff. This can save you the anguish of sorting through a filthy vacuum bag later on.

Dust your kids room first, and then get out the vacuum. You should vacuum slowly to avoid throwing dust up into the air, which can quickly settle down onto furniture and baseboards again, undoing all your hard work.

Once you’ve finished vacuuming, grab your DIY cleaning spray and wipe down the surfaces in the room to remove any remaining dust.

Step 4. Deep cleaning

Our weekly and monthly checklists will keep the majority of dirt and mess in kids rooms at bay, but you should also aim to do a deep clean about every 6 months. If your home is extra busy or messy, we recommend you do this deep clean every quarter.

Deep cleans can remove mold, mildew, and musty smells that can accumulate in things like soft furnishings and curtains, and which can be overlooked in your regular cleaning schedule. This is the perfect time to steam clean carpets and remove any new stains that you might come across.

Before you begin, ensure kids and pets won’t disturb you so you can work faster. A sunny, warm day is also the best day to deep clean, so you can wash bed covers and air out mattresses easily.

We recommend you stock up on things like:

  • Furniture polish
  • Fabric freshener
  • Stain remover
  • Carpet shampoo
  • Glass cleaner
  • Microfiber cloths
  • Old rags

Work around the room slowly, using our checklist above, and ensure no corner of your kids room is overlooked.
